The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. Arnold M. Mallis received both bachelor and master's degrees in entomology from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to his appointment to the Penn State faculty, Mallis was a senior research entomologist for the Gulf Research and Development Company. He came to Penn State as assistant professor of entomology extension in 1968, became associate professor in 1973, and retired in 1975.
